The UK Parliament’s watchdog for the Security Services has delivered a firm rebuke to the Government on its draft Bill the Investigatory Powers Bill. Seeing it as a missed opportunity.
The UK Chapter has engaged with ISC and on this topic more broadly for several years as the Government has struggled to bring surveillance under stable and effective democratic controls.
This is the first major comment from the refreshed committee ‘s intentions to follow up on the work of the previous Parliament and marks a decisive opinion under the fresh leadership of its new chair Dominic Grieve.
Many Internet Society and community participants expressed severe reservations and concerns over the drafting and intentions of the IP Bill at the Scrambling for Safety last month at Kings College in London.
