The UK IGF 2020 call for proposals is open

The date for the UK IGF 2020 meeting has been set for Sept 14th. The call for the issues is still open. As of today, it’s hard to predict the nature of the meeting itself, if it would be in person or a virtual one. Either way, please consider making your proposal for topics and speakers heard. Our chapter leadership team participates in the work of the UK IGF steering committee and we invite you to participate in the shaping of the event by sending your suggestions, concerns, ideas for the topics by filling in this form.Read more ...

Government response to the Regulatory proposals for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security consultation

In June 2019, the Chapter submitted comments to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) consultation on Regulatory proposals for Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security. These comments can be found here.

After months of work, the Government has now published its analysis of responses received and drawn its conclusions.

The full report of findings has been published on the DCMS Web Site.

The UK Chapter will continue engaging with DCMS, based on the “next steps” outlined in the document.… Read more ...

ISOC UK England Chapter signs CDT Letter to Facebook on end to end encryption

Dear Colleagues,

I am hereby letting you know that last week I have on signed an open letter to Facebook coordinated by CDT, the Centre for Democracy & Technology, on behalf of our Chapter, on end-to-end encryption.
The open letter calls for strong security for massive platforms like those that Facebook controls. This comes in response to the news that the governments of the UK, US, and Australia are urging Facebook to stop pursuing their roll out of end-to-end security across the platform.… Read more ...

UN rights experts urge India to end communications shutdown in Kashmir

GENEVA (22 August 2019) – UN human rights experts* today called on the Government of India to end the crackdown on freedom of expression, access to information and peaceful protests imposed in Indian-Administered Kashmir this month. 

The experts expressed concern that the measures, imposed after the Indian Parliament revoked the Constitutionally-mandated status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, would exacerbate tensions in the region. 

Reports have described a near total communications blackout in Jammu and Kashmir since the evening of 4 August, with internet access, mobile phone networks, and cable and Kashmiri television channels cut off.… Read more ...
